A Brief History of the PRI Line
An extension of an EPABX system, the Primary Rate Interface (PRI) is one circuit. In total, there are 30 channels of multiplexed programming. You’ll be able to add up to 30 more phone numbers to your account when you use a PRI line to connect your business phones.
Even if the customer’s PBX only has one physical line ending it, a PRI line can nonetheless accept and send 30 calls at once! An end-to-end digital circuit, a PRI line is just that.
Traditional phone lines can handle voice, data, and video traffic, among other things, via a PRI (Primary Rate Interface) connection that is part of the ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network).
Narayan Communication (Regd.) is the manufacturers of Analog EPABX. Narayan Communication has been taken as indigenous technology which is based on SPC Space Division Multiplexing technology with micro controller. We are the biggest dealer of PRI EPABX Services in Himachal Pradesh. We are providing the PRI EPABX services from last 25 years in HP.
About PRI
A PRI circuit is made up of two sets of copper wires that connect a service provider’s location to a customer’s location via a modem. More than one channel can be carried on a single circuit using multiplexing and demultiplexing techniques. European and Indian PRI lines use E1 lines, which have 30 channels in the two copper lines, while American PRI lines use T1 lines, which have 23/24 channels in the two copper lines.
For data transmission, a PRI line has one channel with a bitrate of 64 kilobits per second.
An Analog/Mixed EPABX system and the later IP-based EPABX systems can be connected to the same PRI line. Terminating the PRI circuit on the PBX may necessitate the use of a PRI Card or Interface. Additionally, a PRI line can connect two PBX systems, allowing for an additional 30 channels of interoperability.
PRI Lines have many advantages:
Instead of a single PRI line, thirty independent analogue trunks might be utilized.
All thirty analogue trunk lines must be terminated at the same time, which increases the expense.
An uneven distribution of calls could mean that some analogue trunks are being used more frequently than expected, while others may still be unused.
To terminate 30 analogue trunk lines in a PBX you need more slots/cards than one slot having either 1 or even 2 PRI trunk cards.
If you have a PRI line, you’ll get roughly 100-500 phone numbers from the service provider that can be dialed directly by outsiders, rather than needing to go through the PBX Auto-attendant.
This unique number will be displayed in the phones that they are dialing to because each extension has its own phone number. The unique caller ID number is used in some call center programs to differentiate services.
You can use the PRI line for both voice and data. When there are no voice channels available, some service providers offer dynamic services that allow data to be delivered over all available channels.
Any channel that is free, rather than the phoned number specifically (for example, if there is one board number but a lot of people are calling in at the same time and nevertheless an allocated channel is given to them).
There are some situations when the service provider has to extend the PRI connection and enable this feature on the PBX for analogue trunks, which can result in additional costs for the service provider and for the PBX.
PRI lines can be used for a variety of purposes, including phone, data, video conferencing, and faxing, all at the same time (on different channels).

There are many advantages to using a PRI line instead of a traditional analogue trunk line.
- PRI lines are more reliable and troubleshooting is easier because they are digital lines. There is some redundancy because they are mostly mounted on a fiber core ring.
- Listening in on digital lines and chats is more difficult.
- Most PRI service providers offer a variety of billing alternatives. Central or distributed billing options are available (department wise, etc.).
- PRI lines are faster to set up than analogue trunk lines to make calls.
- Some service providers provide a variety of flexible plans, such as allowing customers to pay for only 20 channels instead of the full 30 channels. As a result, PRI lines are more affordable for smaller businesses.
The following are some drawbacks to using PRI lines:
It’s only a PRI line that makes financial sense if the service provider charges more than the average monthly value of calls made on analogue trunk lines in an organization for a PRI line. Otherwise, the free call value granted by the service provider for a PRI line might not even be exceeded.
Long distance and international calls with a PRI line are more expensive. For international long distance calls, an ITSP or SIP trunk service provider may charge far less than a traditional phone company.
With PRI lines, inter-branch communication is not free of charge (Some PRI service providers provide this facility, but all your branches may need to have PRI lines from the same service provider and there also might be a minimum revenue commitment for the same). Because inter-branch communication is possible via the internet or leased lines, the cost is greatly reduced.
The cost of a single PRI card to connect to your EPABX/IP PBX is still prohibitive. In most cases, you can only purchase these cards from your EPABX distributor.
